An Ipswich dad growing cannabis in tents inside his bedroom and in a granny flat has avoided jail after pleading guilty to a range of drug charges in Ipswich District Court today.
Police said Adrian Joel Molia, 37, of Karana Downs, was using a semi-sophisticated cannabis setup which included, selling and growing cannabis from two indoor tents.
A raid on his property, north east of Ipswich, in July last year uncovered 27 plants inside the tents with the cannabis haul weighing more than 5kg.
Crown prosecutor Connor Lovett said the qualified boilermaker came clean and showed officers the stash.
Mr Lovett also told the court Molina had sold 10 1/2 ounces (297g) for $2490 over four months with his largest sale being five ounces (142g) for $1400.
The court also heard Molina’s phone contained details of eight deals, however only two eventuated.
Barrister Justin Thomas argued there was no commercial element as Molia was casually selling the cannabis to mates for a small profit.
Mr Thomas said Molia started the venture after getting a prescription for medicinal cannabis to treat a back injury and started growing the drug two years ago for pain management.
Judge David Kent told Molia there was no need to engage in illegal activities as medicinal cannabis had been legal since 2016.
Molia pleaded guilty to the possession of drugs, production of drugs, supply of drugs, failure to dispose of an uncapped needle, and the possession of a bong and digital scales.
He was sentenced to a 12-month suspended jail sentence and a two-year probation order.
