Over 17,000 people have helped turn Brisbane’s streets pink while raising funds in the fight against breast cancer.
The RACQ International Women’s Day Fun Run has raised more than $1.4 million to help the Mater Foundation research life changing treatments against the deadly disease, which roughly 50 Australian women are diagnosed with every day.
Queensland Attorney General Shannon Fentiman told her Twitter followers 17,000 people took part in today’s race.
Pictures posted by the RACQ showed crowds adorned in pink turning out in droves for the run, which weaved through Brisbane’s inner city streets.
The annual fun run starts in South Bank and finishes in Brisbane City via the Story Bridge.
There were 27 streets around Brisbane’s CBD shut including the Story Bridge as a result.
Motorists can use the Clem7 tunnel for free during the closures.
It comes as the world marks International Women’s Day, celebrating their achievements and the progress made towards equal rights.
RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said 27 roads around the CBD, Kangaroo Point and South Bank would be fully or partially closed for around six hours.
“Many inner-city roads, including the Story Bridge, will be closed from 4am to approximately 11:30am to make way for 10,000 runners and walkers participating in this year’s breast cancer fundraiser,” Ms Ritchie said.
“Not only will there be changed traffic conditions to contend with, there’ll also be big crowds around the city, so remember to slow down and pay attention.”
