Paramedics were forced to flee to their ambulance when a gun was pointed at them in a terrifying incident this afternoon, after moments earlier trying to treat the alleged offender.

Four Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were forced to run back to their ambulance after an angered and injured man allegedly pointed the firearm at them just moments after they made attempts to treat him about 1.15pm today.

Emergency crews attended what was initially believed to be a pedestrian and car incident south west of Brisbane, however according to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman, upon the arrival of crews at Waterford Rd in Ellen Grove, the incident had evolved into a road rage drama involving two people and two cars.

One of the people involved had sustained hand and leg injuries.

“We started to treat the patient and the patient became quite angry and allegedly his behaviour became quite aggressive,” a QAS spokesman said.

“Paramedics immediately called police back to the scene, when the patient ran about 50m towards the vehicle, and has reportedly gone to the boot of his car and produced a firearm.

“The man has pointed it at the group of paramedics, who retreated back to their vehicle.”

The spokesman said the Queensland Police Service arrived on scene within a matter of minutes, before paramedics, accompanied by a police escort, took the man to the QEII Hospital.

QAS have a zero-tolerance policy to violence, the spokesman said.

“It’s a scary situation for our officers and just shows they never know what they’ll be faced with. “Due to the quick response of QPS and our paramedics, who are well trained to deal with this sort of stuff, it’s lucky no one was injured.”

The paramedics will receive counselling if required, while the man is assisting police with their inquiries.

Investigations are ongoing.
