Traffic is beginning to ease on the Bruce Highway following a nightmarish day of heavy congestion on the way to the Sunshine Coast, however huge delays remain at Queensland border crossings.

As of 4.16pm, motorists were facing up to 20 minute delays northbound on the Bruce Highway, with congestion between Beerburrum and Caloundra.

There are similar delays in the area for southbound commuters heading back to Brisbane.
