Telstra could do ‘something promising’ with the NBN

THE NBN will be rolled out to an extra 28,000 southeast Queensland households from today as families are told they could be upgraded to faster speeds for free.

It comes as NBN Co has restarted selling its fast cable network (HFC) after putting it on hold for maintenance issues. A HFC NBN connection, can enable download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40Mbps

In coming months the NBN will be rolled out in Bridgeman Downs, Boondall, Geebung, Beenleigh, Bracken Ridge, Willowbank, McDowall, Flinders View, Raceview, Pinjarra Hills, Eastern Heights, Pullenvale, Karana Downs, Mount Crosby, Acacia Ridge, Archerfield, Coopers Plains and Virginia.

The network has reduced its wholesale costs, which has enabled consumers to get cheaper deals or upgrades for free.

NBN Co spokesman Brad Whitcomb urged people to shop around for the best deals.

NBN Co is the wholesaler and households will need to take on a plan with a retailer.

“It’s important for people connecting to the NBN access network to understand how to pick a speed tier and retail plan that suits their needs,’’ Mr Whitcomb said.

“We recommend people talk to their internet provider about the actual speeds they are likely to experience, particularly during peak times, and choose a plan that supports the number of people, usage habits and devices in the home.

“Our latest progress report shows in the last year we have also improved our ability to work with internet providers to restore faults on the network within our agreed time frames by 30 per cent,” he said. “We know there is more work to be done and will continue to collaborate with the industry as the rollout gathers pace.”

Meanwhile, the network has reduced its wholesale costs, which has enabled consumers to get cheaper deals or upgrades for free.

The NBN is now more than halfway built with the rollout on track to finish by 2020.
