A HOUSE fire that tore through a wooden home in Brisbane’s south Friday afternoon has taken the life of a mother of two.

The 46-year-old Carina woman was killed when her home became completely engulfed by flames in a matter of minutes.

Her two teenage children, a boy and a girl, were not at home at the time of the blaze.

It’s unclear how the fire started, however neighbours say the grass around the home was unkept and very dry.

Neighbour Miranda Ward was home at the time of the blaze.

“It was horrible, I could hear her screaming,” Ms Ward said.

“It just went up within a couple of minutes. I don’t think she would’ve been able to get out.”

Ms Ward said she believed the woman could have been watching television at the front of the property when the fire broke out in the rear.

She said the only exit out of the home was down the back stairs, as the front gate was permanently locked shut.

Scenes of Crime and the Fire Investigation Unit were today on scene to determine how the fire started and retrieve the woman’s body.

The woman had lived in the 1960s home for the past 18 months.

Neighbouring properties were evacuated during the fire on Sankey St, Carina, at 4.10pm.

Eight crews attended the blaze.

Police evacuated a neighbouring unit.

Energex were called to the scene due to multiple powerlines being brought down.

The fire was reported under control by firefighters at 5.10pm.

A crime scene has been declared and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blaze.
