There was extensive damage to all vehicles.
A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said that the people involved were “very fortunate” their injuries were not worse, given the severity of the crash.
At one stage all four southbound lanes were closed but all lanes have since reopened and delays have cleared.
Traffic was earlier delayed by up to an hour but as of 10.30am delays of about 13 minutes were being experienced.
Six ambulances and a high acuity response unit were called to the scene, along with three Fire and Emergency Services vehicles.
A man with suspected head injuries is in a serious condition, and another person with leg injuries is in a serious condition.
A woman in her 50s, who was trapped in her vehicle, has since been rescued and is now in a stable condition.
The crash occurred about 1.5km north of exit 54.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.
Police are still investigating the cause of the collison, although Queensland Ambulance senior operations supervisor David Martin said emergency services were iniitally called to reports of a vehicle that had crossed from the northbound lane to the southbound lane.
Meanwhile, emergency services also rushed to the scene of another southbound cash on the M1 this morning.
The incident happened just before 7am, after two motorcycles collided at Ormeau.
