SEVERAL residential properties on Brisbane’s south side will be resumed by the council to build a vehicle-depot for their Brisbane Metro fleet.

It comes as the council continues its negotiations with the State Government to secure other parcels of land for its underground station at South Brisbane.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the council has commenced the formal resumption process to acquire four privately owned properties on School Rd at Rochedale, including three residential properties.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the land would be used to house 60 Metro vehicles at a new depot that is expected to be built in the coming years.

“We commenced discussions with the four property owners in 2017, and have now issued formal notifications to the owners that we require the land for the project and will seek to reach agreement to purchase the properties over the coming months,” he said.

The council will still need to acquire other land from the State Government to build the six hectare facility, which will also be used for driver training.

“The Brisbane Metro depot will initially accommodate the fleet of 60 metro vehicles, with capacity for a further 35 vehicles, as the fleet grows over time,” Cr Quirk said.

“The facility will provide a 13-bay maintenance garage, training areas, an administration building and direct access to the Eight Mile Plains metro station and metro line.”

The final design of the vehicles is yet to be determined, with procurement expected to commence later this year.

The total cost of the Brisbane Metro project is expected to reach $944 million, with two-thirds of it being funded by the council.

There will be two Metro lines spanning 21km, with the first linking Eight Miles Plains to Roma St and the second running between the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the University of Queensland.
