A QUEENSLAND schoolteacher had planned on taking her children on the ill-fated trip to Cambodia in which she was busted for trafficking heroin and sentenced to 23 years’ jail.

Yoshe Ann Taylor, 42, travelled to the country twice and arranged passport documentation for her daughter, 11, and son, 6, for her third trip during the September school holidays.

But The Courier-Mail has been told Taylor’s sister, who was also going to travel with her and babysit the children, was unable to attend, so Taylor left on her own.

The mother-of-two was arrested days later at Phnom Penh International Airport as she attempted to leave for Australia.

A backpack given to her by French woman Charlene Savarino, 19, was found to have 2.2kg of heroin stitched into the spine of the bag. The backpack was inside her luggage.

Savarino has been sentenced to 25 years’ jail, while her boyfriend, Nigerian Precious Chineme Nwoko, was sentenced to 27 years’ jail over the heroin bust.

Taylor, who was living in Esk and was previously employed in state schools, claimed in her defence she had no knowledge of the drugs and believed the only items in the backpack were art supplies.

She had met Nwoko online and thought he was part of a legitimate arts and craft business, according to the defence planning her appeal.

After her first trip, she sent two phones to people she believed were business associates in NSW.

Taylor’s ex-partner has told The Courier-Mail people became sceptical about her new business venture but she was offended by this and was adamant it was legitimate.

“I remember she got excited and said she would be given a business, a car,” he said.

The trips, where she was wined and dined and had all expenses paid, were to arrange an “Australian branch” of the company. She had asked real estate agents about property on the Sunshine Coast. On the third trip overseas, she went to sign a “contract” and told family and friends she would receive money to help set up the store and pay its rent.

Taylor’s ex-partner said she was a naive person, had anxiety problems and became stressed easily. He said he believed she had been fooled into becoming a drug mule.

He said the children had not spoken to their mother since Christmas.

Taylor’s court appeal is expected to be heard later this year.
