A Graceville mother and son have been made homeless after their townhouse was inundated by floodwaters.

Julie Hindley and her son Archer, 7, spent Monday morning at a bus stop, trying to figure out what their next step was.

Ms Hindley said the mental impact the floods were having on children like her son was “very scary.”

She said Archer asked her, “Mummy, where is our home?”

The Hindleys managed to escape the dangerous floodwater with just the clothes on their backs before taking refuge at a friend’s home in Sherwood.

“We are now at a friend’s house, we had got out but with no clothes,” she said.

“A friend got his kayak and went into our townhouse complex to get some clothes.”

Ms Hindley said only 10 out of the 90 townhouses in the complex on Long Street East survived the floodwater.

“The whole complex is just inundated with water,” she said.

“Archer was desperate for his school bag (from the house), concerned he hadn’t done his homework.”

But homework was the least of Ms Hindley’s worries, she said she is a single mother who rents, with no home contents insurance.

“It’s just emotional because even though it’s material things, it’s still mine,” she said.

“Even though I’ve got a roof over my head, it’s not my house.”

Ms Hindley said she’s thankful her son Archer is OK.

“At the end of the day someone said to me, don’t cry for things who can’t cry for you.”
