One very confused driver was snapped driving the wrong way down Mary St on Friday night.

ONE very confused driver was snapped driving the wrong way down Mary St on Friday night.

“Oops wrong way,” wrote Melinda Giblin, alongside a photo she posted on the Gympie Information, Advice and Discussions Facebook page of a sedan driving the wrong direction at the top of Mary St.

Whether it was a case of complete confusion or a the latest in thrill-seeking behaviour, Gympie police have warned of the dangers of this traffic offence.

Gympie’s Sergeant Scott Poole said it doesn’t happen too often because areas are mostly well-signed, but people need to pay attention to the rules and regulations.

“They have to be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles that are not expecting another vehicle travelling in the wrong direction,” he said.

“It may result in severe injury and property damage.”

Drivers also face fines ranging from $110 to $330 if charged with “driving down an incorrect carriage way” or if charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle could be put before the court with serious sentencing ramifications, Sgt Poole said.

In other traffic news from the weekend, a man in his 80s was taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree at about 6pm on Saturday night at Kybong.

Emergency services were called to the crash at Traveston Crossing Rd between the Bruce Hwy and Mountain View Rd, Kybong and said the man suffered minor injuries.
