Wide Bay sporting champions compete for state and national titles

From the Australian national athletics championships to the all school track and field, the QLD basketball championships, BMX and water polo, these 18 local superstars of track, field, court, the surf and the pool have their sights set on some big titles.

Rising stars of track, field, pool and court have been named as recipients of government grants in 2023 to help get them to significant representative meets.

The grants of between $550 and $1000 are for young sportsmen and women between the ages of 12-24 years old, and were announced by Federal LNP MP Llew O’Brien in January.

Representing the region in athletics, Hayleigh Kennedy from Antigua will compete in the school national athletics championships in 2023, and Mailee Scott-Jones from Black Mountain, will compete in the Australian all school championships.

Veteran’s Cooper Laycock and Tamaree’s Hudson McArthur will compete in the school sport Australia 10-12 years national championships, Gympie’s Georgina McCabe, Maryborough’s Kellie Davis and Veteran’s Kiera Proctor are off to the Australian all schools track and field championships.

In basketball, Granville’s Max Batkin and St Helens’ Layden Shaw will be competing in the U18 state championships and BQ U18 state championships.

Matthew Town from Oakhurst will be competing in the Queensland state championship, and Damian Small from Chatsworth will be competing in the Queensland basketball state championships as well as Harley Mckenzie from Oakhurst, who will be competing in the under 18s.

Darcy and Luke Lewis from Sunrise Beach will be competing in the Australian Surf Life Saving championships and Surf Life titles.

Maryborough’s Jarrah Robert will be competing in the Auscycling national BMX championships, Tinana’s Georgie Moller will be competing in the motor sport’s SKAA Australian championships, Noosaville’s Lola Gibbs-Beal will compete in the Aussies swimming competition, and Doonan’s Ernest Gawthorn will compete in the Australian youth water polo championships.
