AS FLOOD waters withdrew from Mary St early yesterday morning, workers moved in early to start a major clean up of the CBD.
Business owners and their staff, local volunteers and Rural Fire Service workers were busy from first light cleaning shop floors and walls and removing rubbish and debris from the main street.
Gympie Flood Clean-up incident controller Ted Uebergang said the unavailability of the urban fire services who were occupied with swift water rescue throughout the Burnett region meant the Gympie Region clean-up was being managed by the volunteer Queensland Fire and Rescue Rural Services.
"All communications and plans were in place yesterday to start at 6 o'clock this morning," he said.
"Our priority was to get Mary St up and running again. It's going fantastic, everybody's worked very hard."
Out of nearly 150 business affected by the floods in the region, some suffered more damage than others.
The owner of Mama & Papa's Pizzeria (on the corner of Mary and Monkland Sts) was assessing damage after the shop was inundated with 1.5 metres of water.
"The water came over the timber bench tops so we're hoping that will all dry out. The damage will run into the thousands (of dollars) though," he said.
Despite the losses, Mr Bertino was grateful of those who took time out of their pub crawl on Sunday to help lift one of the 300kg professional pizza ovens out of the shop.
Mr Uebergang said the clean up in Mary St would continue today and tomorrow, before work on council infrastructure such as parks and footpaths would begin.
"The priority is to get business premises and people's homes cleaned out so they can get back in and get back on with their life."
