A MAN aged in his 40s or 50s has died after the ute he was driving towards Gympie in hit a gum tree at high speed near Goomboorian this morning.

A MAN aged in his 40s or 50s has died after the ute he was driving towards Gympie in hit a gum tree at high speed near Goomboorian this morning.

The man was the only occupant of the car which was travelling along the Tin Can Bay Rd about 8.30am when it suddenly veered off the road and into the tree.

The impact tore the vehicle apart and it erupted in flames, leaving a wide area of scorched earth around it.

There were no skid marks on the straight stretch of road. 

Other motorists who witnessed the crash stopped and ran to the scene, pulling the man out of the burning ute and taking him across the road where, first they and then the paramedics, tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

A CAR has caught on fire after rolling into a ditch on Tin Can Bay Rd and unconfirmed reports indicate a person has died near Goomboorian this morning. 

A white ute in a ditch off the main road to Tin Can Bay from Gympie was fully engulfed by flames, one witness told The Gympie Times. 

It caused a road block of chaos near the Kia Ora turn off. 

"When I got there, cars were just stopped all over the road and people had half pulled up the road."

She said there was a sense of urgency about how people were acting, but could not tell if anyone was hurt. 

One woman was sitting on an embankment near the accident scene and being tended to by people, the witness said.
