GYMPIE has woken to a thick layer of fog covering the region this morning, which will likely take a couple of hours to lift.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Adam Blazak said the makings of this fog, which is up to 100m thick, were unusual for this time of year.
Fogs are usually caused by a dried-out upper atmosphere and low temperatures, Mr Blazak said, but this heavy fog has been caused by a moisture-dense lower atmosphere without the chill factor.
“There is a lot of moisture still pushing in,” the forecaster said.
“The low has been dragging in moisture from the topics down form the north east and wetting up those lower layers,” he said.
While the fog has interrupted air travel at the Brisbane airport, the fog should lift by about 9.30am in the Gympie region Mr Blazak told The Gympie Times.
“The sun has a fair way to work its way through,” he said.
Drivers are reminded to take care in the conditions by slowing down, paying attention and switching headlights on.
Tomorrow may be another foggy morning, but most likely not as spectacular and more likely in lower-lying areas.
