AWARD winning geneticist, Alan Wilton, a strong critic of Fraser Island dingo management practices, died in Sydney on Friday, aged 57.
His death followed a 20-month battle with cancer and came two days before he was to marry long-time companion, Dr Barbara Zangeri.
An occasional Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service consultant, he had claimed Fraser Is policies endangered dingoes and undermined the island's World Heritage status.
Patron of the Save Fraser Island Dingoes group and a strong backer of Rainbow Beach dingo campaigner Jennifer Parkhurst, he was awarded the Australian Unsung Hero of Science award in 2004 for discovering genetic markers identifying the difference between pure dingoes and hybrids.
His work, which led to US and Australian patents, was also valued for its contribution to eliminating genetic diseases in domestic dogs.
