A MAN who was left in severe pain after an encounter with a marine stinger on Fraser Island has disputed a doctor's opinion that it was not an irukandji jellyfish.
The 22-year-old Moreton Bay man, who asked that he not be named, said he was spearfishing on the western side of the island when the incident happened.
He was with another man who was also stung. While the second man decided to be airlifted off the island, the first man didn't, a decision he came to regret, he said.
The two men were among seven people stung on the western side of the island in recent weeks.
Dr Andrew Haig, of Hervey Bay Hospital, said staff did not believe the potentially deadly irukandji jellyfish were to blame for the marine stings.
But the man said his symptoms seemed to correspond with a sting from the notorious jellyfish.
Within about half an hour of being stung, he experienced severe muscle and joint pain while the other man had difficulty breathing and was vomiting.
