Tenika Lawther wants answers after metal chunk rips through Gympie home’s roof

An unidentified piece of metal has torn through the roof and ceiling of a Gympie home, shocking a couple and just missing their five-month-old daughter.

‘Space debris’: Mystery metal ball narrowly misses 5-month-old

A Gympie family of three is searching for answers after an unidentified object tore through the roof of their home, ricocheted off the floor and landed where their five-month-old daughter had been in her bouncer minutes earlier.

Tenika Lawther said the 3cm-long, 27g ball of metal blew a hole in their tin roof before bouncing off the tiles, flying past her face at speed and landing in her daughter Oceana’s bouncer.

Her partner Matthew Gardner had taken Oceana out of the bouncer moments earlier.

“If she was in it she’d be dead,” Ms Lawther said.

“I didn’t even see it.

“It was massive loud bang … almost like a gunshot inside your house.”

Matthew Gardener and Tenika Lawther have been left hunting for answers after a mystery piece of metal fell from nowhere, blew a hole in the roof of their Gympie home and ricocheted across the room to land where their daughter Oceana had been only moments earlier.

Mr Gardner said it was like a “lightning strike out the front of your house”.

“Just that intense bang … it was really, really quick,” he said.

The explosion threw debris and dust across the room when it blew through the roof, leaving chipped tiles in its wake.

The origin of the falling metal ball remains a mystery.

There are no pieces of shrapnel or other parts of the metal ball inside or outside the home, Mr Gardner said.

The source has left the internet divided.

A Gympie family has not been able to identify the source of the falling metal, which was about 3cm long.

“We’ve had people that say they shoot guns and ‘no it’s not a bullet’, and we’ve had people say ‘I do shoot guns and it looks like a bullet,” Mr Gardner said.

“Who do you believe?”

Mr Gardner said no-one heard a gunshot before the metal struck.

An online flight tracker showed the closest aircraft Wednesday night was at least 6km away.

They are hoping experts can shine some light on the cause behind the mystery metal ball.

“It’s just crazy,” Ms Lawther said.

“People are offering to buy it already.”
