Suzanne Lund devastated after dog mauls her kitten on Caledonian Hill

A personal trainer has recounted the devastating scene that unfolded at her Gympie home when a massive dog jumped the fence and mauled her cat to death. Worse still, its owners saw the whole thing and did nothing.

Cat mauling on Caledonian Hill, Gympie

Personal trainer Suzanne Lund was setting up her work studio when she heard a rustling in the bushes outside her Caledonian Hill home in Gympie.

That’s when the barking began, and she heard her cat, Caesar, scream.

Two-year-old Caesar had been sleeping in the front yard soaking up rays, as he did most days, when a huge dog that looked like a bulldog, jumped their front fence and attacked.

Ms Lund ran outside to see the dog holding her cat in its mouth, thrashing it around.

“I ran down the stairs to try to save my cat. I’ve somehow gotten the cat out of the dog’s mouth,” she said.

Ms Lund then heard someone calling the dog and assumed it was someone coming to help.

“It was actually the owner of the dog and they called him over then just kept walking. I just can’t believe they watched it then walked off.”

A devastated Ms Lund was also injured in the attack; her thumb was bitten and there were several scratches all over her body from when she wrestled her cat out to the dog’s mouth.

“I got bitten somehow, and I’ve got scratches all over me from trying to save him,” she said.

Ms Lund carried Caesar around to the back of the house and held him as he died in her arms.

She broke down while recounting what had happened.

She could not believe the owner of the dog had entered her yard to retrieve their animal and not said a word to her.

“They witnessed this horrific incident and just walked off. They didn’t even stay to see how me or the cat were, or to offer help or assistance. Not even an apology.”

The attack came just weeks after an eight-year-old boy was mauled by the neighbours dog at a Southside home.

Ms Lund posted a call to action on Facebook, desperate to find the owners of the dog. The post had almost 300 likes in a local community group and hundreds of comments.

Ms Lund was also concerned about the lack of concern from police, responding to a comment underneath her Facebook post, “the police weren’t interested”.

“They said the only way they would get involved is if we provided evidence showing that the owners provoked the dog to attack my cat, even though I was injured,” she said.

Police Media said yesterday they would look into the matter.

“Dogs are a matter for council but we will look into the complaints made against the police,” they said.

“I filed a complaint with the (Gympie Regional) council yesterday afternoon. They called me this morning and told me they’ve identified the owners and plan to take action against them,” Ms Lund said.

Council spokeswoman Sharna Rowley said an investigation was underway into the incident.

“(The) Council takes incidents of dog attacks very seriously and encourages the community to report any attacks to council,” Ms Rowley said.

“In this instance, the matter was reported to council by two different people, one being the alleged victim. Council rangers quickly responded to the reports and have already identified the owner of the dog who is alleged to have attacked the cat. An investigation is currently underway.”

Ms Lund will provide a formal statement to the council on Thursday.

“My thing is if things have been reported before, why something wasn’t done either about the owners or the dog before now,” she said.

Caesar had been a part of the Lund family for two years and was considered a “healer”, especially for Ms Lund’s son who had just had a stroke and was in the hospital at the time they got him.

“I have moments where I think I’m all good, and then I relive it and then I’m just not good.”

“He was my little shadow and now I don’t have him anymore,” Ms Lund said tearily.

“He just didn’t deserve that”.

Caesar was cremated on Monday afternoon.
