GYMPIE Special Olympic swimmers scooped the pool in a recent Special Olympic Queensland State games.

The eight swimmers bought home a total of 15 medals and all after only starting swimming training less than twelve months ago.

The swimmers gave a lot of the credit for their success to Gympie Gold Fins swimming Coach Liz Manthey.

Manthey has put a lot of time into the swimmers coaching and encouraging them to compete in the titles.

The games were held on March 29 and were opened by Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan.

Gympie swimmer Sandra O'May had a memorable day when she was chosen to carry the torch in the relay.

The torch arrived at the pool courtesy of police officers in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, it was then carried around the pool in relay form by special athletes from each region.

Gympie athlete Kim Reisenleiter showed her swimming form winning three medals in every stroke except butterfly.

“I don't do butterfly because it's too hard,” she laughed.

She along with her fellow team mates will now have an anxious wait to see if they are selected in the Queensland side for the Australian Special Olympics.
