IT has taken over 50 years, but the Mary Valley will again have a rugby league side to cheer on.
The newly formed Mary Valley Stags will compete in their first competition when the boys run on in the Maroochy nines competition this weekend.
Treasurer Jenny Carlson said the team is really fired up and are hoping for a good showing in the carnival.
“We look like we are going to be competitive,” Carlson said.
“The boys played a trial match against Pomona (last year’s finalist of the C Grade division) and only got scored against in the last few minutes,” she said.
Carlson said the rugby league team had been a real shot in the arm for the Mary Valley community after all the upheaval of the Traveston Crossing dam issue.
“Everyone in the Valley is right behind the team,” she said.
Rugby league in the Mary Valley can be traced back to 1916, but the last time they had a side was in 1961 playing in the Noosa competition.
The Mary Valley Stags kick off at 11.25am on Saturday at Wises Road in Maroochydore and play gets underway Sunday 10am.
Carlson is hoping for as many supporters as possible to turn up for the historic occasion.
