A FREAK chip and chase try with only three minutes left on the clock denied Gympie Devils reserve grade side a much-needed win at the weekend.

Coach Greg Rendell said Devils started well, jumping out to a 16-0 lead against Beerwah, but dropped off to go down by two points, 38-40.

He said things were not looking good for the Gympie team, which lost twice in as many weeks.

Injuries to key players have slowed the once top-of-the table Devils and Rendell is hoping his boys can hold on until key players return to the team.

“We have players out in key positions, like hookers and halves,” Rendell said. “Injuries are really hurting the club at the moment.”

Lee Mason, Josh Greeves and Luke Bolton were the Devils’ best in the loss.

“I played Luke in the centres, instead of wing,” Rendell said.

“I think we have found his position – he just gets better and better.”

Devils A Grade had a bye last weekend. The under-18s also went down by a close margin to Beerwah.

This weekend, the Devils will wear yellow for men’s health and are urging supporters to come along and cheer on the team.
