RAINBOW Beach surfing star, Noah Lane, is preparing for an assault on the world surfing tour after winning Gympie Regional Council’s Australia Day Junior Sports Award on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old surfer couldn’t attend the ceremony because of work commitments and his dad Justin accepted the award on his behalf.
“Dad rang me after I won the award,” Lane said.
“I was stoked.
“I couldn’t believe it, I was really surprised.”
Lane said that even though he was based on the Gold Coast, Rainbow Beach was still his home and he was honoured to win the award.
His surfing achievements during 2009 on the Australasian Pro Junior Surfing Circuit included a first in the Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior Competition in South Australia, second in the Chill Pro Junior in Western Australia, first in the Oakley State of Origin Teams Challenge and a number of seconds and thirds in junior competitions.
Noah was invited to surf in the Cloud Nine Billabong Contest in the Philippines, was one of six Australian surfers invited to participate in an American photo shoot and story and qualified for the Pro Junior Surfing World titles for 21 years and under in Sydney this month.
Lane is ranked sixth out of 250 surfers in the Australasian Pro Junior Series.
He is now gearing up for a shot at making the world surfing tour by entering the World Qualifying Series.
Lane said the first four qualifying tour events were in Australia and from there he was heading to Europe.
“Depending on how I surf I will be looking at entering events in Portugal, Scotland and France,” Lane said.
“There are 40 qualifying events throughout the year and I have to pick and choose events that suit my surfing style.
“Hopefully I can earn enough points to fight my way up the ladder,” he said.
Lane is financing most of the trip himself and is hoping some local sponsors might come on board his world tour dream.
He is already sponsored by Perfect Wave Travel Company, Mt Woodgie surfboards and the Alex Surfshop.
“I am more than happy to put company stickers on my board if people want to part with some cash,” Lane said.
The surfer said he would like to thank his mum, dad and brother for their support
