A SHOWER of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of competitors in the Cooloola Schools Triathlon yesterday, but it did make the Tin Can Bay roads a bit treacherous for riders.
Thankfully for organisers there were no serious accidents on the bike leg of the event, despite it being the largest field of competitors on record.
Over 350 primary and secondary school students turned up to try their luck in the multi-sport race.
Triathlon spokes person Sherene Moy said the event ran like clockwork.
“It is pretty full on getting everything organised, but we seem to be getting better at it every year,” Moy said.
The under-19 competitors were the first to leave the blocks of the Tin Can Bay swimming pool and Dave Farandah from Saint Patrick’s College won in a time of 1:10:42.
The 16 and under boys race was won by Jordon Warhurst of Gympie State High School in a time of 47:59 while Jessica Carlton from Cooloola Christian College won the girls race in a time of 56:27.
Shaun Lee from James Nash State High School won the 14-and-under male triathlon in a time of 28.31.
Brooke Whiting from Tin Can Bay State School won the girls under-14 race in a time of 39.43.
The under-12 race was won by Stuart Wilson of Two Mile State School in a time of 32.21and Jessie Wade of Tin Can Bay State school under 12 girls stoping the clock at 33.51.
A full wrap-up of all the results including team standings will be published in The Gympie Times on Tuesday.
