THE Cooloola Heat came away from a 2-2 draw in Maryborough with a bad taste in their mouth after a spiteful encounter against Wallaroos on Saturday.
Heat captain Dave Dixon said inconsistent umpiring was the cause of both teams' frustration.
“It was the worst umpiring we had all year.
“It was a disgrace,” Dixon said.
The captain didn't blame the umpires for the Heat's below par performance however.
“We didn't play to our potential. If we had, we would have beaten them by a couple of goals,” Dixon said.
One positive for the Heat was the return to form of striker Mitchell Kuether.
The speedy forward score two brilliant individual goals.
Kuether's first goal gave the Heat a 1-0 lead, but sloppy marking in the midfield saw the Roos equalise with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
Kuether produced another special goal in the second half, beating the keeper to give the Heat back the lead.
But a contentious call by the umpire awarded a corner against the Heat with only five minutes to go.
Roos scored and levelled the game.
Heat midfielder Nathan Stephens had a chance to win the game for the Heat in the last minute, but his rocket-like shot ricocheted off the cross bar.
The draw sees the Heat hang on to second spot in the Maryborough hockey competition, just one point in front of Wallaroos.
They need to win one of their remaining two matches to hold their position.
The Heat play Granville in Maryborough next week and then Brothers at home.
