KYM Coomber says Gympie has the best kart race track in Queensland and it looks like a lot of other racers from all over the region are starting to agree.

The Cooloola Kart Club, of which Coomber is secretary, had more than 150 entries for its latest race meeting on Sunday - the largest in the club's short history.

“We think we have the best club and track in Queensland,” Coomber said.

“We are two years old and still improving the facilities.”

The normally barren pit lane was a buzz on Sunday, the noise of 150 revving karts, the smell of fuel and the sea of shade covers made it the place to be, but Coomber said Sunday's roll up would be nothing compared the 500 karts expected to turn up for the state titles in July.

Coomber said the volunteers of the club still had a lot of work to do to prepare for the championship.

“We're hoping to put asphalt down on the pit area alley ways as well as a few other projects,” she said.

Meanwhile 10 members from the Cooloola Kart Club will be heading off to Puckapunyal in Victoria for the Victorian State Championships today.

Coomber said the young racers would be using the Victorian event as practice for the Queensland State titles.

“They already have over 400 entries including some from New Zealand,” she said.
