GYMPIE Under-19 cricket captain, Dan McCarthy, produced a brilliant captain's knock of 72 not-out to secure a win over Fraser Coast on Saturday.
Playing in Maryborough, the Gympie side was set a total of 186 off 50 overs to secure victory.
The Gympie side started well, but when Langley Johnston was out for 20 and Josh Brady fell for 25 in quick succession the team looked like it had the wobbles.
Batting at number four McCarthy walked to the crease when the score was two for 49 and set about stabilising his teams innings.
His 72 included six fours and a six, and with help from Brandon Sauer, 22, and tail-ender Ben Santowksi, 15, Gympie reached the total with 12 overs to spare.
McCarthy said his team's run rate was good and they had plenty of overs up their sleeve, but he was worried about running out of wickets.
“We had lost a few wickets and I started getting pretty nervous,” McCarthy said.
“When I hit the winning runs, I was relieved.
“I was thankful the pressure was off.”
He said the wicket was a bit flat, but it played pretty well.
Tail ender Ben Santowski scored 15 runs off 10 balls which included two fours and a six and his effort really helped the team over the line.
Gympie bowler Brandon Sauer slowed the Fraser Coast batting attack with good bowling figures of three for 28.
