AFTER a number of complaints have surfaced from customers about an offensive smell at Southside Woolworths, the Gympie supermarket is investigating the problem.
Southside Woolworths management told The Gympie Times today they are aware of the problem and are in the process of fixing the unknown smell, but seem as perplexed as their customers.
Some customers on social media, who have described the smell as "varying in degrees of stinkiness, smelling like a grease trap to fresh diarrhoea", suggested the smell may be to do with the fat drained from the cooked chickens in the deli section.
Others suggested it might have been the potting mix sitting near the air zone, while others said they had not experienced the smell.
Southside Woolworths management said all the fat that is cleaned from the store deli ovens regularly during the day is stored in containers in a ventilated outdoor area, not in the shopping area.
"There's nothing in the store that would be related to the chicken fat," he said.
He said a contracted plumber was called to inspect the drainage of the store, but everything had been found in order.
More contractors have been called to check ventilation and other avenues in the store that could be causing the smell, he said, and they will keep investigating until the problem is solved.
