Sex criminal Riley Colin Carkeet in court for failing to report

The man has again fronted court for failing to report that an under-age girl displaced by the Gympie floods had been living at his parent’ home, where he was also living.

A 21-year-old man convicted of a sex crime against a 12-year-old girl in 2021 was fined $1000 in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday for failing to report and contravening a police requirement in relation to that conviction.

Carkeet was given an intensive correction order in 2021 for having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.

He faced court on Monday for failing to report to the Child Protection Offending Registry on March 5 that a girl under the age of 18 was living at his residence less than five months later.

Carkeet had been living at his parent’s house, staying in a separate dwelling underneath the home, the court heard.

The girl had contacted Carkeet’s parents asking to stay at their house on March 3, as she could not return home because of the February flood event.

Her stay, intended to only last three days, became permanent accommodation in the care of the parents, the court heard.

Child Safety services was aware of the girl living at the house and had permitted her stay with Carkeet’s parents, it heard.

The girl was aware of Carkeet’s criminal history and was not concerned, the court heard.

Lawyer Laura Nightingale said Carkeet was rarely at home during that time as he was busy helping flood victims.

Whilst he had reported to his probation and parole officer, he was unaware that he also had to report the girl’s presence at his home to the CPOR.

Carkeet is not currently, nor was he in employment during the flood event.

Carkeet had previously failed to report on eight occasions since his reporting requirement period began in October 2021.

“At only 21, you have a very serious criminal history,” Acting Magistrate Raelene Ellis said.

Carkeet received a $1000 fine and a conviction was recorded.
