A sleepy corner of town will be transformed into a new, multimillion-dollar shopping hub under plans approved by Gympie Council.
The development, across the road from Victory College on Old Maryborough Road, will be a large commercial building with a supermarket, bottle shop, two specialty shops, a service station, a gym, a medical centre, and a childcare centre.
The shopping centre, named Araluen Village Market, will sit on 4.2ha of mostly vacant land and will soon become a bustling part of Gympie, having shops open seven days a week.
The bottle shop and specialty stores will be open from 6am to 9pm, the supermarket and service station will be open from 6am to 10pm, health care services will be available from 8am to 6pm, the childcare centre will be open from 6am to 6pm, and the gym is planned to be available 24 hours a day with security cards.
95 parking spaces, 16 bicycle spaces, and six motorbike spaces will also be provided for shoppers.
Two entrances will be built along Old Maryborough Rd which includes a one-way driveway leading to the service station, and a third entry and exit will be built along Bonnick Rd which has long been planned to connect Old Maryborough Rd to Corella Rd.
Once finished, the centre will occupy about one third of the block with plans that the remainder of the land may be developed for industrial uses or subdivided into residential blocks.
There is currently a 50 year old home sitting on the plot of land which will be demolished to make way for the development..
DA documents from developers Just Chillax Pty Ltd describe the new centre as having a “range of commercial and community uses that will service local needs” that will “make a positive contribution to the existing and future streetscape appearance in this locality”, and “will not cause significant adverse amenity impacts and is in keeping with the intended character of the area”.
