Gympie region man found not guilty of rape, jury undecided on assault

The jury has returned a verdict on two of three charges in the matter of a 33-year-old man accused of raping and assaulting his former partner.

A 33-year-old Gympie region man has been found not guilty of raping and assaulting his partner by a jury, a second assault charge remains unresolved.

The man, who cannot be legally named to protect the identity of his complainant, had been facing three charges in relation to alleged offences committed against his former partner.

The trial, which started Tuesday, ended Thursday when the jury returned its not guilty verdict on the rape charge and one of the two assault occasioning bodily harm charges.

It was unable to reach a verdict on the remaining assault occasioning bodily harm charge.

The matter has been adjourned until the next District Court sittings at the city and the man remains in custody.
