A middle-aged former baker locked his elderly mother out of their house and attacked her after he spent days prior drinking alcohol.

Lars Jonas Brodin pleaded guilty in Gympie District Court on January 30 to common assault, choking and aggravated contravention of a domestic violence order.

The court heard on May 14, 2022, Brodin was with his 74-year-old mother at their Rainbow Beach home.

Brodin, who had been drinking for the past four days and nights, became irritated when his mother walked out of the house, crown prosecutor Michael Andronicus said.

Brodin locked the house and set the alarm system following her departure but she entered the house using a spare key.

While his mother was putting her parrot away, Brodin punched the woman between her eye and ear, the court heard.

He then wrapped his arm around her neck from behind and choked her for about 10-15 seconds, Mr Andronicus told the court.

The woman scratched his arm so he would let her go and she ran to her bedroom to call police.

Brodin was arrested that day and remained in custody until January 29, 2023.

Defence barrister Simone Bain said it was “scary” for her client to face day-to-day stresses if he were to be released.

She said Brodin would consume up to two litres of spirits per day prior to his arrest and he understood his mother was getting older and had some needs.

Brodin was trained as a baker but his workplace shut down in 2017, leaving him shocked and with a lot of time and money on his hands.

“He never got back on his feet from that point on,” Ms Bain said.

His mother sat in the public gallery during his court appearance.

“You must understand how disappointing for her it is that she finds her son not only assaulting her in this way but standing in court being sentenced for that conduct,” Judge Glenn Cash said.

Brodin was sentenced to two years’ prison to be released on January 30, 2023 with 259 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served.
