A woman with a history of stealing has been put behind bars for her latest crime spree in the Gympie region.

Kaitlin Lee Lagosha was sentenced in Gympie Magistrates Court for 18 charges for offences between September 2021 and August 2022.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan told the court Lagosha’s “particular galling” and “disgraceful” offence was stealing from a woman with an “intellectual disability” on April 22.

The woman was carrying her groceries into her home and, not being able to carry all her bags at once, left some of her belongings on the porch.

While the woman was inside, Lagosha snuck onto the porch and “snatched” the remaining groceries along with the woman’s purse, the court was told.

Mr Callaghan said Lagosha stated she stole to “feed her family” yet she was not living with her children or a partner at the time.

She “spent her money on drugs” and therefore had no funds left to pay for her own food, Mr Callaghan said.

Lagosha, who appeared in court via video link, stole again on a separate occasion.

She said to the magistrate she attempted to steal a trolley to help her family during the floods and hard times in Gympie before her lawyer Chris Anderson recommended she should stop talking.

Lagosha was previously convicted of stealing in 2019 and 2020, including shoplifting at Wayne’s World.

She was sentenced to 12 months’ prison with parole eligibility after four months, with her 78 days in jail declared as time served. Convictions were recorded.

Lagosha pleaded guilty to 18 charges including five counts of trespass, two counts of stealing after previous convictions, two counts possessing drug utensils, two counts of failing to dispose a syringe, two counts of possessing meth and one count of possessing cannabis and two counts of breaching bail.
