A 21-year-old Tin Can Bay boilermaker has fronted court after he was busted driving three times the limit while taking a mobility scooter for a spin on a main road.
Gympie Magistrates Court heard Joshua Graham Coleman was spotted by police sharing the seat of a silver mobility scooter with a mate, driving along Gympie Rd, Tin Can Bay.
The scooter belonged to the grandmother of one of his friends, the court heard.
Coleman was controlling the speed while his friend was steering.
Both were breath tested and Coleman blew 0.153, more than three times the limit.
Police prosecutor Michael Phillips said Coleman told police he had been drinking numerous spirits earlier that night.
Defence lawyer Greg Wildie said his client admitted the act was “stupid”, and was otherwise described as having good character.
“Stupid things seem like a very good idea when a young man has had a bit to drink, Your Honour,” Mr Wildie said.
He said Coleman was employed as a boilermaker.
Coleman pleaded guilty to driving a mobility scooter under the influence and was supported by his parents in the public gallery.
He was disqualified from driving for six months.
A conviction was not recorded.
