‘It was flying’: Two dead in fiery stolen car crash at Chatsworth
A hoon in an high powered car was seen revving his engine in the middle of a road before taking off at high speed just hours after two died in a fiery crash involving a stolen car.
The shocking death of two people after a stolen car collided with two others resulting in a fiery crash has sparked calls for young offenders to face tougher action from the courts.
Furious locals, sick of seeing carnage on their roads, have called for offenders to be given serious jail time to deter future offenders.
It comes after the driver of a stolen car, and another innocent driver, died in a three-vehicle crash on Gympie Curra Rd at Chatsworth, just past the Horton Rd intersection.
A rescue helicopter was ordered but sent back to base following the rollover northeast of Gympie’s CBD shortly after 3pm Saturday.
Police said a stolen black MG sedan was speeding and dangerously overtaking vehicles when it collided with the side of a black Toyota sedan, before hitting a third vehicle, a silver Holden sedan, causing both vehicles to flip and the Holden to catch on fire.
One motorist reported seeing a “little black hatchback driving dangerously south through Gunulda around 2.40pm on wrong side of the highway”.
Another said: “Yes my son and I passed that car, it over took 2 cars on a solid line, it was flying!”
Another said it was the car. “I was there. Witness on scene as well.’’
The driver of the stolen vehicle, a 20-year-old Kilkivan man, and the driver of the Holden, a 50-year-old The Palms man, both died at the scene.
Inge Kristine Howland said it was ‘so sad an innocent life taken because some idiot decided to go for a joy ride!
“ We had stopped in Gympie around the time the accident occurred.
“So glad we did or who's knows what may have happened.’’
Kaswdl Butler said dangerous drivers needed to be held responsible for their actions.
“They know they are doing the wrong thing.
“Then they get a slap on the wrist and sent out to do it all again only worse.
“ If we did the wrong thing we would have been belted and pulled back into line by our parents or the local police would deal with us accordingly.
“And we certainly wouldn’t go and step out of line again that’s for sure.”
“Our justice system needs a major overhaul,’’ Tiff Hogg said.
“Innocent people are dying because of this.”
In a Widgee crime forum, one local said they witnessed an eight cylinder car revving in the centre of Glastonbury Road, between The Palms and Widgee before it finally took off at high speed toward Widgee.
“This section of road is well known for this and other foolish driving activities, likely not the first time they've done so and for them to choose to do so just a few short hours after two people lost their lives in a car crash involving multiple cars just beggars understanding.”
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said a fire had broken out at the crash site and there were three patients – two having sustained “life threatening” injuries, and the third reported to be in a stable condition.
The Gympie-Curra Road was closed from Chatsworth southbound to Gympie.
Forensic Crash Unit’s investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
Hours later another man died after a crash on the Bruce Highway at Apple Tree Creek.
It follows a nightmare few days on the roads in the Wide Bay, with the Bruce Highway shut for 16 hours at Owanyilla after a petrol tank ignited in the flames following a crash.
That was followed by a serious crash in the same stretch of road just hours after the highway reopened in which a man was seriously injured.
