A Gympie teenager with a history of bashing police is back before the court for injuring a police officer while being taken to a children’s prison. Here is the latest.

Australia's Court System

A 16-year-old girl has been re-sentenced in Gympie District Court over a violent struggle at a detention centre, where she chipped a police officer’s tooth.

The court heard the girl, who was 15-years-old at the time and cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to two charges of seriously assaulting a police officer in Gympie Children’s Court after she lashed out at an officer while being taken to a correctional centre on November 11, 2021.

During the struggle, the girl struck the officer on the knee and chipped his tooth. He was injured, but not seriously injured, the court heard.

It is not clear how the girl chipped the officer’s tooth.

She was sentenced to 49 days in detention, which Judge Nathan Jarro said was to “reflect on what she had done” and placed on six months probation.

Judge Jarro said the girl had four previous convictions for serious assault of a police officer, and 97 convictions for offences including violence, property damage and trespass.

However, she did not have any convictions recorded against her.

Judge Jarro said the girl suffered mental health issues and had grown up with a traumatic home life.

She was re-sentenced to six months probation, down from 12 months.

No conviction was recorded.
