Gregory James Alexander jailed for brutal Wolvi assault
A Queensland man has been jailed after a drunken rampage over a dog left a woman with her prosthetic eye knocked out and lung collapsed during a vicious assault.
A Widgee sandblaster has been jailed after drunkenly accusing a woman of stealing his dog and then bashing her so viciously he knocked her prosthetic eye out and collapsed her lung.
Gregory James Alexander, 40, had hosted his victim at his home in the hours before the January 11, 2022 incident at Wolvi, Gympie District Court was told Monday.
As she left to go home, one of his dogs jumped into her car and she drove off with it.
The court heard Alexander was planning to go to her house later in the day for dinner.
Instead, he turned up about 6pm, drunk and threw a rock through her kitchen window.
Judge Glen Cash said Alexander then “bizarrely” accused her of stealing the dog, walked into her home and started bashing her “for no good reason”.
He knocked her to the ground, punched and kicked her, then dragged her through the home before continuing his assault.
The court heard she lost consciousness and had “no recollection” of his assault on her from that point, but she was left with bruises and abrasions across her body as well as a fractured rib, fractured sternum and partially collapsed lung.
Her prosthetic eye had been knocked out and onto the patio during the assault, the court heard.
The court heard a pre-existing medical condition meant the lung injury could have been life-threatening without medical intervention.
His defence lawyer said Alexander was struggling with alcohol on the day and lost his temper.
Justice Cash said Alexander’s criminal history included some drug offences, but only one other incident of physical violence.
This happened on the same day when he returned to his home after bashing the woman and assaulted his father by putting his hands around the man’s throat, and his aunt by pushing her to the ground.
The court heard Alexander had started rehabilitation over his drinking problem.
Alexander’s victim now lived “in a state of fear”, been left with a “sense of frailness” from his assault, and been forced to break her lease and move, the court heard.
Justice Cash accepted Alexander’s guilty plea to wilful damage and grievous bodily harm, and sentenced him to three-and-a-half years’ jail, with the sentence to be suspended for another three-and-a-half years after 14 months had been served.
