An experienced Queensland Magistrate says a woman’s recent drink driving alcohol reading of almost six times the legal limit is the highest he’s ever seen in court.
The revelation came when Rebecca Eve appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court on July 3 after she was caught driving at Cooloola Cove on March 5, 2025, with a blood-alcohol content reading of 0.286 per cent.
In addition to driving a car under the influence of liquor, Eve was also charged with obstructing police during the incident.
“I am horrified to think of anyone else being on the road while you were driving,” Magistrate Bevan Hughes told the court.
Mr Hughes said he had worked throughout Queensland and had never dealt with a blood-alcohol reading as high.
Eve’s solicitor Chris Anderson said she had not been a drinker before she turned 35, but the collapse of her marriage and other personal circumstances led to her developing an alcohol addiction.
The drinking problem was reflected in Eve’s traffic history, the court heard.
“Mr Anderson says you have people in your life that speak very fondly of you — they’ll be speaking very fondly of you at your eulogy,” Mr Hughes said.
He said he could understand why Eve began drinking as a coping mechanism but said there was no excuse for driving under the influence.
He also told Eve it was “not scientifically possible” she could have been in control of her vehicle at the time.
Eve pleaded guilty to both charges.
She was fined $1828, and her licence was disqualified for 15 months.
