An illegal campfire at Double Point Island that was still smouldering in the morning has left rangers on high alert.

It comes after an illegal campfire on Fraser Island nearly broke out into a bushfire last month.

Senior ranger Col Lawton and a team of rangers located the campsite near the Leisha walking track when they noticed an unsupervised fire creeping into the bushland.

The fire had been lit either in the evening of February 1 or the morning of February 2.

““The campfire escaped into the bush north of Leisha Track at Double Island Point, and high tides hampered access, but rangers got to the site on foot,” he said.

With the help of some campers and boaters nearby, the rangers were able to put out the fire before it escaped further into the bushland.

Mr Lawton is asking campers to follow the rules and apply for camping permits, vehicle access permits and not lighting unlawful fires.

“Our national parks have high ecological, cultural and conservation values and campfires are banned to protect those values and prevent bushfires,” he said.

The maximum fine for illegal campfires is $689 and will be taken with a zero tolerance approach from rangers.

“Most visitors to Teewah and Double Island Point do the right thing, and we’re asking people who want to behave like an imbecile to consider the environment, their fellow campers and their hip pocket,” he said.
