A man who attacked his partner with an electrical cord, a hammer, a tyre iron, a needle, and his fists in a pattern of violent abuse will remain behind bars until 2024.
Christopher Andrew-Lloyd Johnson, 35, faced Gympie District over his shocking abuse of the woman over two-months from December 2022.
The Cherbourg resident’s most serious offending occurred on December 3 when he locked the woman in her own home and attacked her with the cord.
The court heard she had returned to the family home to collect medical equipment for her sick daughter.
When she realised Johnson was there she tried to leave, but he locked her inside.
He then attacked her with the cord, wrapping it around her neck and pulling her backwards onto the ground before strangling her with it.
The court heard he kept the cord wrapped around her neck for about a minute, leaving her struggling for breath until she was able to get a hand between it and her neck.
Johnson’s attack was only interrupted by a knock on the door when her brother arrived.
Later in the day she then locked herself in her bedroom when Johnson took a knife from the kitchen and threatened her.
When she refused to let him in he punched holes in the walls.
The abuse continued even after, with the court hearing at another point in the day he hit her with a hammer five times on the knee and 10 times on the shoulder.
He tried to drag it down her back, at which point she was able to take it away from him.
Two weeks later, on December 19, he attacked her again while she was on the phone with her mother.
He accused her of calling the police and hit her in the head with a tyre iron.
She fled into the backyard, and he threw the weapon at her, missing and hitting a water tank she then hid behind to call police.
The court was told he then called her mobile phone 17 times, leaving threats to kill her and telling her if he went to jail he would damage her face.
Less than a month later, Johnson was with the victim and her family as they were returning from a trip to celebrate her birthday.
They stopped at a service station, at which point Johnson threw a packet of cigarettes at her and then threatened to stab her with a needle.
During the ensuing struggle she punched him several times in the face and he tried to gouge her eyes out, the court heard.
Johnson’s lawyer said his client had been exposed to domestic violence growing up.
Johnson pleaded guilty to deprivation of liberty, choking, wilful damage, three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm (one while armed), and two counts of common assault, all domestic violence offences.
Judge Nathan Jarro said the 36-year-old was the one who “just has to stop this behaviour”.
He said Johnson’s crimes were “cowardly acts” and he had “repeatedly targeted” the victim.
Johnson was sentenced to four years jail.
He will be eligible for parole on March 17, 2024, owing to 275 days already served in pre-sentence custody.
