A former hotel bouncer, who knocked a teen unconscious and caused a teeth-smashing fall, was later subjected to chilling death threats by the boy’s businessman father, Gympie District Court has heard.

Brian Robert Thompson is a former bouncer at a Gympie hotel and his victim’s dad, Wayne Donald Dean, a prominent former butcher and chair of the city’s famous music muster and owner of the Cooloola Sails Club.

Thompson, a 51-year-old tall, heavy-set man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard on December 11, 2021, Dean’s 19-year-old son, who wasn’t charged with any wrongdoing, was at the hotel where Thompson worked when his friend was asked to leave due to his behaviour.

Wanting to return, he jumped the back fence.

Crown Prosecutor Alex Stark said when the teen tried to walk past unnoticed, Thompson pinned his arms behind his back and escorted him to the front of the hotel.

“When he approached the front entrance, the complainant struggled to free his arms, the defendant lifted him up off the ground and slammed him towards the door entrance, making him unconscious,” Mr Stark said.

The young man then fell through the door and down a couple of steps to the footpath, with Thompson holding and falling with him across the bottom half of his body, Mr Stark said.

The size disparity between the two was noted to the court, with Thompson being some 90kg heavier than the teen who had remained unconscious for two minutes.

The excessive force of slamming Mr Dean’s body against the door resulted in ongoing dental issues for the complainant, including the loss of two teeth, Mr Stark explained.

Defence lawyer Nathan Turner told the court that since the assault his client had been subjected to harassment and death threats by Mr Dean who watched the proceedings from the public gallery alongside his son and three others.

He claimed Mr Dean put a coffin and shovel in the back of his ute “with the words on the top of the coffin saying “Triple H RIP” while driving around Gympie for seven days and also parking the ute on the side of the highway” in prime view.

Mr Dean previously pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court, which heard Thompson was known by the WWE wrestling nickname Triple H, to threatening violence. Mr Dean was fined $600 and convictions were not recorded.

“He has also just in the last two weeks been charged with stalking Mr Thompson,” Mr Turner told the court on Tuesday.

The court also heard Thompson had given up his job as a security guard, relied on work as an arborist, was the sole income earner for his family and feared for their safety.

Mr Turner said his client passed on “sincere apologies for the pain caused”.

During the sentencing, Judge McGinness addressed Mr Dean at the back of the courtroom, telling him if he continued his behaviour towards Thompson it would land him in jail.

Judge McGinness said Thompson used excessive force, and his role as a security guard was to “stop such injuries, not inflict them.”

Thompson received an 18-month suspended jail sentence which will hang over his head for two years and must pay $6000 in compensation to his victim within the next 12 months.
