A Gympie concreter with ties to a criminal gang has been jailed after he kicked a police officer in the face and threatened to kill him during a drug induced psychosis at the Gympie Hospital.

Alis Flinn, 26, appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court via video link from the Maryborough Correctional Centre on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to seven charges including contravening a police direction, two charges of obstructing a police officer in a public place while intoxicated, public nuisance, threatening to kill a police officer, possessing crystal meth and serious assault of a police officer in a public place while intoxicated.

The court heard Flinn turned up at the Gympie Hospital in a drug induced psychosis on April 14, 2022, and asked staff for a drip to “put him to sleep”.

Flinn had sought refuge at the hospital after fearing he was going to be hunted down by a member of a criminal gang, who he had a dispute with over damage to the undercarriage of his car after he lent it to him.

Hospital staff asked Flinn to leave but he refused and police were called to remove him.

Police prosecutor Melissa Campbell said he was arrested after refusing to move on, but he lashed out at an officer while being placed into the back of a paddy wagon.

“ (Flinn) was told not to kick, and has then popped his leg and kicked the officer to the face, connecting with the upper lip,” she said.

Flinn then looked directly at the officer and said he would “track (the officer) down and kill him like a dog”, she said.

Defence lawyer Mark Oliver said his client had an addiction to crystal meth, which began after his ex partner had an affair with his friend.

Prior to his addiction, Flinn was a successful concreter who earned $100,000 a year.

Alis Flinn pleaded guilty to seven charges in Gympie Magistrates Court including contravening a police direction, two charges of obstructing a police officer in a public place while intoxicated, public nuisance, threatening to kill a police officer, possessing crystal meth and serious assault of a police officer in a public place while intoxicated. Mr Oliver said his client lashed out after he asked police to take him to the station, but they declined.

Flinn hung his head low as Mr Oliver relaid this detail.

He told Magistrate Chris Callaghan he wanted his life to return to normal after being released from prison, and he did not plan on using drugs again.

Flinn was sentenced to 12 months jail, but had his 106 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

He will be released on August 13, 2022.
