GYMPIE woman Jess Hayes was lucky to see the rare sight of a platypus playing in the Mary River near Kidd Bridge today.

Jess said she was walking across Kidd Bridge to Southside with her two-year-old child about 11.30am and spotted the creature in the water.

"We spotted it and it was playing games with us by diving under and then popping back up about a minute later," she told The Gympie Times.

"My two year old loved it."

She said she spotted one about three years ago in a creek at Kandanga but didn't realise they were in the Mary River.
