Popular camping spot Double Island Point was left in a state of disarray after an influx of campers took advantage of the warm weather over the past week and left the area full of rubbish.

Nicole Bragg was camping on Double Island last weekend and was outraged after she discovered a cluster of rubbish in the area.

“Where we camped I filled 3+ jumbo rubbish bags up and two full boxes up and took it to the bins where it belonged,” she said on Facebook.

The issue is the latest in a string of problems facing beaches between the Gympie region and Noosa and coincides with a police crackdown on hoons tearing up Teewah Beach.

Brisbane man Richie Ho spent the weekend camping at Inskip Point and was caught in an extensive queue of cars on Sunday afternoon heading for the Noosa ferry from Double Island Point.

“This was the worst I’ve ever seen it,” he said.

“I got to the line at 3.10pm … it was 5.20pm when I got onto the ferry.”

He said while the queue was frustrating, he did not see an issue with the number of people camping in the area.

“As the population grows, it becomes more crowded,” he said.

“As long as people keep some distance from each other, I think it’s still a very enjoyable place.”

A Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science spokesperson said the way the area was left was a “total disrespect for the environment and the camping experience of others”.

“When our rangers have to deal with preventable issues such as rubbish, it adds to the cost of managing the area and reduces the time they can spend on the important work of protecting the park estate,” they said.

The department are appealing for public information to find those responsible.
