A man has suffered “superficial” burns in a shed blaze west of Gympie with firefighters forced to bring in heavy machinery to protect other nearby structures.

Multiple emergency crews were called to the rural Oakview property, 10km outside Kilkivan, about 2.15pm Thursday.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man, in his 70s, suffered the burns to his hands, legs, and the top of his head.

He was taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said crews were also forced to bring in the machinery to create fire breaks around the 50m by 30m shed, which was engulfed in flames when trucks arrived.

The fire’s ferocity had caused parts of the structure to collapse, the spokesman said.

A half-dozen crews were still on scene at 3.30pm working to contain the fire.
