Members of a prominent family have been left devastated after the timber home which they have owned for decades went up in flames.

Multiple firefighting crews and emergency services were called to the rural Schachts Creek Rd property at Langshaw, about 25km southwest of Gympie and bordering the Mary Creek State Forest, about 1.30pm.

Firefighters were unable to save the timber home which had been fully destroyed by the flames by 2pm.

It was unoccupied when the fire broke out.

A nearby shed was left untouched by the fire.

The visibly shaken owner of the property did not wish to be named, and declined to comment at this time.

A neighbour who alerted emergency services to the fire said power in the area had been out until about 1pm.

It is understood the family had owned the house for at least 50 years, and the property itself dated back even further.
