Rain clouds are forecast to set in on Tuesday and stay for more than a week across the Gympie region with the chance and payload of showers increasing through to Sunday and Monday. The higher rainfall is expected on the coast, but inland areas could receive up to 50mm.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Shane Kennedy said the rain would gradually get heavier from Wednesday and be heaviest on Saturday and Sunday, with the chance of a thunderstorm on Thursday,

"From (early in the week) really the wind turns more onshore and there is more moisture returning to the air.

"The wet weather will increase from Wednesday to the long weekend."

The change is also expected to bring minimum temperatures back to average.

A high pressure system moving towards the Tasman Sea is causing the wet weather and the easterly wind direction change.

An upper trough and low are also forecast to form over inland Queensland.

Ms Wong said winds and the swell would increase throughout the week.

"We may see some increasing swell from the east, so it will be good for some," she said.

There is also a possibility of a strong wind warning on Sunday and Monday, most likely for Fraser Island and north, though potentially also for Rainbow Beach.
