Swimming goanna

A kayaker was shocked when he spotted something strange 100m from shore on Thursday morning.

Sean Permezel, the owner of Epic Ocean Adventures in Rainbow Beach, was leading a group out when he noticed something he initially thought was a stick.

“I first thought it was a stick as there was a lot of debris that day on the water due to the consistent strong southerlies for the last 5-7 days,” Mr Permezel said.

He quickly realised that it was not a stick.

“One of the participants shouted, ‘It’s a lizard’ and I paddled over and it was a monitor lizard (goanna) but was swimming really, really well,” he said.

He and his group of kayakers guided the goanna towards the shore. The goanna was last seen as the group was heading back to shore.

Mr Permezel kayaks daily at Double Island Point but said he had never seen anything like this before.

“I’ve seen a few over the years in the shallow ocean but this fella was 100m off the shore line,” he said.
