Kaiden Stewart James Warner in court for drink driving

The 19-year-old first crashed his grandmother’s car into a ditch while drunk, then he crashed his own car while drunk, and then he was caught doing a burnout while over the limit. The message was clear: he didn’t care.

Kaiden Stewart James Warner, 19, pleaded guilty to 10 offences in Gympie Magistrates Court on Thursday, including drink-driving three times and crashing his grandmother’s flaming car into a ditch.

A 19-year-old Curra tradie “did not care” about the law when he left his grandmother’s flaming car in a ditch and committed several other driving offences between court dates, a court heard.

That was what police prosecutor Melissa Campbell told Gympie Magistrates Court on Thursday when Kaiden Stewart James Warner pleaded guilty to 10 offences, including three drink-driving incidents, driving unlicensed twice, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and causing unnecessary noise with a burnout.

Warner was supported by his stepfather, mother and sister in the public gallery.

The court heard he was caught drink driving on June 25, when he crashed his grandmother’s car into a ditch on Apollonian Vale, Gympie, and it burst into flames. Marijuana and ammunition were found in the car.

Warner was not a licensed weapon owner.

He was breathalysed at the scene and blew 0.14, almost three times the legal limit.

He was given a notice to appear, but on July 6, was caught drink-driving again when he crashed his car at Araluen, and blew 0.07 at the scene, the court heard.

Warner was on his P-plates at the time, and had his licence disqualified.

He was given another notice to appear, but was caught drink-driving a third time on August 14, despite a disqualified licence.

The court heard he was caught hooning at Curra so dangerously, his tyres were shredded.

He blew 0.79 at the scene, more than twice the legal limit, and the car was unregistered and uninsured.

Police prosecutor Melissa Campbell said it was clear Warner did not care about the consequences of his actions.

Sergeant Campbell said it was clear Warner did not care about the consequences of his actions, shown by his repeat offending.

“He doesn’t get to live in our community and not obey the rules of our community,” she said.

Defence lawyer Laura Turner said her client did not know why he committed the offences, but said the death of his grandfather about a year ago had an effect on him, and he turned to alcohol to cope.

She said Warner has regular appointments with a psychologist, who was helping him with the issue.

Despite the drugs found in Warner’s grandmother’s car, she said her client did not smoke marijuana, and would lose his job as a labourer if he returned a positive drug test.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan sentenced Warner to six months jail, suspended for two years and his licence was disqualified for two years.
