Jacaranda limb blocks Reef Street

INNER city Reef Street was blocked for more than two hours yesterday when a large limb snapped off an old jacaranda tree, narrowly missing parked cars.

Gusty winds and rot in the fork of the tree are thought to be the cause of the fallen limb.

INNER city Reef Street was blocked for more than two hours yesterday when a large limb snapped off an old jacaranda tree, narrowly missing parked cars.

Gympie police said it was lucky no one was driving under the limb as it fell or there could have been a fatality.

As it was, Gympie Regional Council workers had to remove part of the fallen limb with a chainsaw to allow vehicles trapped, but not damaged, under the limb to exit the scene.

The owners of a V8 Toyota Land Cruiser were surprised to see their 4WD sitting under the fallen limb.

The Mothar Mountain family, who wished to remain anonymous, had just been to lunch in Mary Street and were eating an ice-cream when they came to get their car.

They thanked their lucky stars the tree didn’t hit their car.

“It goes to show how tough Toyotas are,” they laughed.

“Oh what a feeling!”
